A Dinnington mum has welcomed news that plans to shut a children’s heart unit have been suspended.
Proposals to close the unit have been put on hold after an independent review suggested consultation was based on flawed analysis’.
Another report on the organisation of heart surgery will be made in July as NHS England look into the matter.
The announcement was made by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in the House of Commons yesterday (Wednesday).
The NHS had wanted to close Leeds as part of plans to concentrate surgery at a smaller number of specialist sites - leaving South Yorkshire families facing lengthy trips to Liverpool or Newcastle.
Cassie Symms, who has been campaigning to keep the unit open ever since her son Zander Jak had life saving surgery there, was ‘very happy’ with the latest development.
“I thought what Jeremy Hunt said was well said,” she said.
“I’m so pleased they have to go back to the drawing board about the NHS process. I’m very happy with the news.”
