Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Highways Agency’s announcement that a £150 million transport scheme to relieve congestion on the M1 will start next year.
The proposal will make the M1 between junctions 32 and 35a a ‘managed motorway’ and convert the hard shoulder to an extra traffic lane in both directions.
A number of cameras, information signs and signals will be installed as part of the improvement scheme.
The construction work is due to begin between January and March 2013, with an estimated completion date of summer 2015.
